Self-Expression: Encouraging Teen Development

Teens are often exploring their interests and passions through self-expression. They are trying to figure out who they are and want to be. It can be a challenging time. It’s also an opportunity for growth and development.

The Importance of Self-Expression in Teens

Self-expression is a large part of a teenager’s personal growth and development. Encouraging teens to express themselves safely and respectfully can help them build confidence and self-awareness.

By providing them with opportunities to explore their interests and creativity, while supporting them, you can help them develop a strong sense of self and identity.

Allowing your teen to explore different forms of self-expression opens doors for them to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas more effectively. Self-expression also helps them connect with others who share their ideas and passions, and ultimately lead to a more fulfilling and satisfying life.

How Teens Express Themselves

Teens use many things to express who they are and how they feel.

  • Appearance self-expression

Teenagers have always used their appearance to nonverbally express themselves. From the way they style their hair to the outfits they wear, this is the identity that they are claiming.

Although their appearance may not always appeal to the eyes of those around them, teens generally focus the approval of their appearance towards their peers.

  • Music self-expressionself-expression: teen showing love of music

Music is constantly changing and evolving. There are so many genres to choose from. Teens not only use music to express who they are but also to stay “trendy.”

A teen’s choice of music influences multiple aspects of their life. They tend to cling to their favorite artists and essentially emulate them.

  • Art self-expression

Art can be a fantastic outlet for self-expression for teenagers. Whether you prefer painting, drawing, designing, or dancing, there are countless ways to explore your creativity and express yourself through art.

Not only can it be a fun and engaging hobby, but it can also be a great way to relieve stress and build confidence in your abilities.

Encouraging your teens to take on responsibilities and make their own decisions can help them develop a sense of independence and autonomy. Provide opportunities for them to pursue their interests and passions, whether it’s through extracurricular activities, hobbies, or style.

Keep in mind that all influence is not positive influence. Without diminishing the light that you teen is learning to brighten, monitor their interests. Although teens are much older, they are still children. Having guidance along the journey is crucial.

You should be “in the loop” with trends and cultural changes. Because they are still learning and developing, they may not fully understand all that they want to partake in. Have those tough conversations about expectations and responsibility. Teens need continuous guidance, but also space to learn.

Providing positive feedback and acknowledging their accomplishments can also help boost their self-esteem. By empowering teens, we can help them become successful and fulfilled adults.

It Takes A Village

I believe in the phrase, “It takes a village to raise a child.” We may not always understand our teens, even though we were one at some point. But teens typically choose no to be their authentic selves around their parents.

Teachers and coaches are great resources to use when you want to understand your teen a little more. Especially because they spend so much time around them. Building those relationships with the other adults in your teen’s life is a great way to start understanding and empowering them. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
