Finding a Medicare provider for mental health counseling services can sometimes be a headache. Depending on what insurance plan you have been enrolled in, or whether it is a Medicare Advantage plan such as Blue Advantage or Humana, you may find it difficult to find the mental health therapist who accepts Medicare.  It is my intention to share with you an enhanced perspective on pains free approach on how to locate a Medicare-approved counselor near you.

Can All Counselors Accept Medicare?

Insurance policies are constantly changing so it is important to speak with your Medicare provider to find out exactly what type of therapist is approved to offer behavioral health counseling services under your plan. In many cases, if Medicare is your primary provider, counseling services will not be approved through a licensed professional counselor (LPC) or licensed marriage family therapist (LMFT).
There are some exceptions where there is Medicare coverage for licensed professional counselors and licensed marriage family therapist.  Medicare Advantage plans.  Though each of these groups of therapists is trained and qualified to provide adequate mental health counseling services, presently, in most Medicare plans will not approve Medicare mental health billing for counseling services with these credentials.  Each of these licensing organizations has been working diligently to promote policy to Congress that will allow for increased diversity with the range of therapist who accepts Medicare insurance plans for counseling.

What Types of Therapists Can Bill Medicare?

Presently, if you are seeking a therapist who accepts Medicare plans, it would be best to follow with a psychologist or license independent clinical social worker also recognized as an LICSW, LCSW, or CSW.  Some level of proof concerning credentials is crucial in order to avoid misunderstandings or a false lead regarding your mental health professionals credentials.

Are There Copays For Mental Health Services?

Generally, a copay is required with most Medicare plans. It would be best to consult with your Medicare plan professional prior to setting up an appointment with your mental health counselor. Once you have spoken with your Medicare representative, they can provide the information that you will need to verify if your plan requires copays, deductibles, or if the provider that you are seeking services through is in-network with your local plan.

How Do I Find A Medicare Counselor?

It can be difficult to find the right fit when searching for a mental health counselor that accepts Medicare. Word of mouth is a great source for identifying a good counselor.  However, not everyone wants to share that they have received therapy services.  One great resource to find a qualified mental health therapist who accepts Medicare is Psychology Today.  Psychology Today provides a directory of counselors who are in your area, along with their specialties and fees.
