What is ADHD?
Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a common diagnosis for children and adults. When left untreated during childhood, ADHD can significantly impair an adult’s daily functioning. People with ADHD struggle with attention and focus, organization and task completion, hyperactivity, mood regulation, and social expectations. Effective treatments are available
including therapy, coaching, and medication options.
This chronic condition can cause problems with managing emotions, actions, and thoughts. Furthermore, people with this syndrome may struggle to manage their behavior and concentration, pay attention, control overactivity, follow directions, stay organized, and regulate their mood.
Most of the time, this problem is diagnosed in childhood, and it can continue into adulthood. Effective treatment is available for this chronic condition, and if left untreated, then it can lead to serious and lifelong complications.
How is ADHD Diagnosed?
To diagnose ADHD in your child, you have to first make an appointment with their healthcare provider. There is no specific ADHD test for teens that can diagnose the problem but your child’s healthcare provider will gather information by observing their behavior in different settings such as school, home, or any other social setting. The DSM-5-TR provides guidelines for diagnosing ADHD. After evaluating your child, the healthcare provider can make a diagnosis along with the type of ADHD.
A trained professional such as licensed therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical doctors can comprehensively assess for symptoms utilizing several types of assessment tools, clinical interviews with parents and individuals, and collaborative interviews with teachers or other medical professionals involved in a person’s care. This information will guide the trained professional in proper diagnosis and make treatment suggestions for
individualized care.
Why is a Comprehensive Assessment for ADHD Important?
Our comprehensive ADHD assessment includes the completion of evidence-
based, approved assessment tools, and a clinical interview of the individual
and parent (if applicable) and how these symptoms may be impacting the
individual in home, school, work, and social settings. Screening and
assessment also include identifying other potential mental health diagnoses
such as depression and anxiety.
What Can You Expect From an ADHD Assessment?
Our ADHD comprehensive assessment can be completed in 2 to 3 sessions with the trained and licensed professional.
SESSION 1 (approximately 60 – 90 minutes):
- Completion of evidence-based screening tools (available for completion prior to appointment upon request and is highly
recommended) - Clinical interview with licensed professional to discuss family and personal history, medical history, and personal account of symptoms.
- Completion of release of information for medical provider and schools for collaborative information
SESSION 2 (approximately 60 minutes):
- Review of screening/assessment tools and results
- Review of completed evaluation and discussion of treatment recommendations.
- Printed copy of the evaluation with treatment recommendations provided to client.
After the assessment, you are able to share this report with medical providers or schools to inform them of next steps for academic and/or medical needs. The assessment provider will also make treatment recommendations including outpatient therapy and/or coaching, which can be provided by our office, and make referrals for medication management or
further medical/psychological testing, as appropriate.
